Three Kalamazoo, MI, Houses Destroyed by Blaze

The fire in downtown Kalamazoo appears to have started in a vacant structure and spread.

Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed three buildings in downtown Kalamazoo early Tuesday.

The fire appeared to have started in a vacant house and spread to two others, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Lt. Justin Wonders told WOOD.

One was vacant while the other, a quadplex, was occupied. Three residents were evacuated and are OK.

“Due to the proximity of the other houses, we have to control the exposures in the area here so it doesn’t spread to every house on the block. So we were able to contain it to the three due to our efforts this morning,” Wonders said.
